Happy December, writers!
Before things get blissfully quiet for a few weeks, I wanted to put out the call for another round of Group Coaching for Winter 2024, which will begin January 7th.
This is an intimate group focused on process and support.
Designed for writers looking for accountability and guidance as they move through their work, group coaching offers the support system you need to get your work done — or, often, to get to a place where you can even begin. Whether it’s solving questions of craft and process or clearing aside psychological or practical blocks, these groups are designed to improve not only your work, but your relationship to it in a structured and supportive environment.
During our eight weeks together, I'll be your honest, expansive, realistic (yet encouraging!) guide for learning how to integrate writing into your actual life — and how to stay connected to your work in a way that feels meaningful and productive. Together we'll decide on a structure, direction, and set of shared goals based on the interests of the group. Our meeting times will be divided between these agreed-upon topics — such as detailed craft discussions, the realities of publishing, existential questions of the writing life, and stubborn points in process — and a rotating spotlight on an individual group member's particular circumstances and concerns.
Details:
Each week is $75/week, and I ask for a 6 week commitment out of the total 8 weeks, though you don't have to decide in advance which weeks you will skip. 6 weeks is $450, and 7 is $525, and 8 is $600. You can start with 6 weeks and add on if you want to do more.
We meet on Zoom Sundays, 11:30 am-1pm EST.
We'll run the following dates:
Jan 7, 14, 21, 28
February 4, 18, 25 (Skipping the weekend of the 11th for reasons I’ll detail in a minute!)
March 3rd
If this sounds like you, please fill out this brief/easy application. No writing sample required, simply a commitment to digging into process over product in a like-minded group.
***If you cannot make the above dates/times but are interested in group coaching, please fill out the application anyway and note when you have windows when you’d be willing and able to join such a group. It’s always possible to shift times.***
As for the weekend of February 10th/11th: I’m waiting on another class to go live online, but here are some clues: it’s virtual, it’s for novelists, and will be 10am-1pm the weekend of February 10th and 11th, so clear those decks if this intrigues. I’ll post those details for registration as soon as they are live.
For my New York City writers
There are still a few spots left in my in person workshop on the Upper West Side this winter, starting January 10th, and running 8 weeks, with Sackett Street Writers, for intermediate and advanced writers—you’ve taken a workshop before, and are ready to receive and give feedback on work-in-progress. We will workshop both short stories and excerpts from longer work of fiction.
Details on the workshop and application are here
Workshops, at their best, are community spaces, and I work pretty hard at making the room feel like a space for both mutual appreciation and useful honesty. A few details: I love to use contemporary fiction as models, don’t require absolute silence from the writer (an outdated practice, in my opinion), and expect writers to really show up for one another in giving thoughtful feedback, as I think it’s where so much can be learned about our own work.
One-On-One Work: Manuscripts, Coaching
I’m currently open to working on: individual short stories, one-on-one coaching. I’ll reopen my books to book-length work again in February, and am always happy to schedule those in advance. If you are applying for low-residency MFAs with winter or spring due dates, I have some availablity left for scaled down packages as well. Get in touch backtalklazarin@gmail.com, or by replying to this email, or fill out the form on the bottom of this page.
Have a great rest of the year!
